One of the best features of VCRs is the ability to
record TV programs at specified times. With a few clicks of a button you can be sure not to
miss the one-time broadcast of the latest PBS documentary (even if it is at 2:00AM) or the Monday
Night Football game (even if you are stuck in a meeting). Fortunately, you can do the same
with radio. Using a fabulous tool called Cybercorder 2000, you can record any radio clip or
program. Then, you can add this audio file to your next multimedia presentation.
Is This Really a Useful Tool?
Assume you were to create a presentation on your company's 4th quarter
results. While the quarter was marginal, the company actually did quite well in comparison
to its competitors. You can to bring in the competitor information to help frame your results.
Of course, you could simply put some figures on a slide and speak about them in your presentation.
But consider how much greater impact could be made if you were to add a radio clip from an "end
of the week" stock recap. Easy enough to do . . . there are many ways to record
a radio clip like this. But what if the radio show airs at 7:15 — and you are in your
car at this time? Or course, you could go into work early — but what if you are on a
plane or in a meeting? This is where the real flexibility of a VCR for the radio comes in.
How Does Cybercorder 2000 Work?
Cybercorder 2000 is a software program that lets you record radio shows
(or actually any sound input) on your PC hard drive. You can record spoken audio such as talk
radio, sports, news, or special events. You can even use Cybercorder 2000 for recording music.
Playback is easy. Just select the desired track to play from the list
of completed recordings. Cybercorder 2000 lets you record with any of the audio compression
formats, sampling rates, and frequencies available on your system to save disk space. The best
thing about Cybercorder 2000 is how easy it is to use. Just download the software, connect
the output jacks of an EXTERNAL stereo receiver or radio to the input jack of your computer
sound card, and you are all set to record!
The Programming tab shows you all of the set recordings.
The Recordings tab shows you all captured recordings and their file size.
You really don't need much in addition to this tool to make recordings.
Specifically, you need to have a sound card installed on your machine. (You connect the radio
output jacks to the sound card's line-in jack). Additionally, you may need to adjust your
Windows Mixer settings for optimal performance.
To reach the Windows Mixer settings, do the following:
- Go the the Windows Taskbar > Control Panel > Multimedia.
- Choose the Advanced tab to select the appropriate Mixer device.
- Then, double-click on the Mixer to bring up the appropriate driver settings.
Simply adjusting your hardware configuration as needed should ensure
that all Cybercorder 2000 recordings are optimal.
When you have finished capturing and editing your recordings, try adding
them to your next multimedia presentation. See Inserting Sound in PowerPoint Presentations for
details.
What Makes Cybercorder 2000 Unique?
- Ease-of-use
Connect the radio headphone or output jacks to the computer sound card "line-in" jack.
Set to your favorite radio station, adjust the Windows mixer settings and Cybercorder 2000
does the rest.
- Programmed or manual recording
You can schedule as many recordings as you like or instantly start a recording for the specified
amount of time. The scheduled recordings can be set for a single time or for selected days
of the week such as Mon-Fri 9AM. Program descriptions can be given to the scheduled recordings
to later identify them.
- Long recordings
It is theoretically possible to program a recording to be as long as 24 hours. Think of
the file size!
- Recordings list
All recordings are shown in a list, and any recording can be played from this list. Recordings
can be removed from the list or from the disk, and can also be added back to the list if
present on the disk.
- Playback window
You can easily advance a recording forward or reverse using a slider control.
